ABSTRACT

Abstract art is art that does not attempt to represent an accurate depiction of a visual
reality, but instead use shapes, colors, forms and gestural marks to achieve its effect.

The early days of photography centered on true to life imagery i.e. family portraits, images of streets, towns, mansions… Over time photographers expanded their vision to more moody images, ultimately to where photography is today; an all encompassing art form, generated by camera and lens, and producing a vast sampling of imagery from reality to less recognizable abstracts.
This call is about the abstracts; those images that are not instantly identified as that person, that thing, etc. It doesn’t matter if you photograph something abstract or create the abstraction through photographic processes. Macro shots, close ups of graffiti, fanciful post processing manipulations or just photographing something at an angle that disguises it – they all work.

As with all NYC4PA calls all 2D photo mediums are welcome.

DECONTEXTS

Loosen Art Project

Milan, Italy

The beginning of modernity in the artistic field is marked by the introduction of a perspective vision, thanks to which the figures, within a planar space, are arranged according to an order of depth of field. The object acquires an “internal space”, and with this it takes autonomy from the external space and is no longer an object in a space, but is itself the creation of its own space of representation: it becomes removable, and can be displayed in any place. The act of extracting an object / subject, isolated or inserted in imaginary spaces, imposes an evaluative approach oriented on the intrinsic meaning – and aesthetic – of what is exposed, and with it imposes questions such as “how much context is needed for us to categorize an object? How much can be taken away before an object completely loses its identity, before it truly becomes something else?”.

FLORA

SE Center For Photography

Greenville, SC

Artists throughout the ages have been drawn to the vast and varied world of flora. What moves you? Do you celebrate the essence of beauty or strive to heighten recognition of the perilous path of our environment? Are you inspired by a single bloom or a profusion of blossoms in a lush bouquet, enchanted gardens manicured or messy, plants endangered or invasive, carefully cultivated or sown by nature, bursting forth or shriveling on a vine?

Our Juror, Wendi Schneider is a Denver-based visual artist widely known for her ongoing series of hand-gilded photographs, States of Grace – illuminated impressions of grace in the natural world. Drawn to the serenity she finds in the sinuous elegance of organic forms, she embraces photography to preserve vanishing moments of beauty in our vulnerable environment.

35-40 Selected images will hang in the SE Center’s main gallery space for approximately one month with the opportunity to be invited for a solo show at a later date. In addition, selected images are featured in the SE Center social media accounts (FB, IG, Twitter) and an archived, online slide show. A video walkthrough of each exhibition is also featured and archived.

Stories: Narrative Photography

PH21 Gallery

Budapest,

While photography is popularly associated with capturing the moment, it has always been a sensitive medium of storytelling as well. Looking at a photograph may allow for understanding much about the past that has led up to the moment frozen in time; it may also enable the viewer to imagine the possible future unfolding of events that may evolve from the still record of the here and now. Photographers portraying people, objects, and places can tell us inspiring stories, provided we take the time to study and interpret the images. A narrative told in a single photograph is an exciting challenge for both photographer and viewer alike. Hopefully we appreciate these works with the care and curiosity they deserve.

Nancy McCrary is the curator and this is what I want to see. Your images of the American South – urban or rural, whimsical or dead serious, with people, plants, dogs, cats, wild animals, lush foliage, the morning dew and evening fog, that light you only get in the South, heat and humidity, from the islands to the mountains to hanging on the walls of the gallery and online. Diaspora Studies

The Curated Fridge

Somerville, MA

Diaspora describes scattered populations whose origins lie in separate geographies, dispersed from their indigenous territories. Historically, and to this day, it frames both the Jewish people fleeing persecution throughout Europe and beyond, and people of African descent who were traumatically displaced by the trans-Atlantic slave trade. It also extends to Palestinians in 1948 and 1967, Native Americans, Tutsi Rwandans fleeing genocide, Armenians, Rohingyas in Myanmar, and countless other peoples.

Diaspora can also take on a wider meaning, pointing to the myriad ways dispersal causes cultural shifts, how people maintain heritage, joy, and tradition in spite of scattering and trauma, and the complexity of identifying with a “homeland” while living outside of it. For this open call, we’d like to see work that responds to these many meanings and experiences.

The Beauty in Madness

Praxis Photo Arts Center

Minneapolis, MN

Madness (mental illness) is something that frightens and fascinates us all. It is a word with which we are universally familiar yet haunts the human imagination.

Through centuries, in poetry, prose, drama, and the visual arts, “madness” has been on display for all to see.

With devastating effect, mental illness can disturb our commonsense assumptions; create unbearable disruptions in the routine of daily living; and turn our experience and our expectations upside down. And yet, it is this upside-down world view that opens a universe of unique and inventive perspectives oblivious to those from free from disruptions of the mind. (think Vincent van Gogh, Edvard Munch, Frida Kahlo, Virginia Woolf and Edgar Allan Poe)

Praxis Gallery seeks work that explores ideas linked to mental health, be it conflict or humor, fiction or fact, or any other literal or ephemeral lens-based investigation. We welcome photographic art that questions conventional assumptions about mental health or celebrates the unique perspective only visible to those who can see the “beauty in madness”.

The theme of each call is directly related to the scheduled exhibition. Portfolios of up to 12 images are shown in two ways—via prints and electronically. Prints (up to 22″ on longest side) are displayed on stands. Above the stands, a large HD monitor presents a continuous slide show of the two portfolios.

Calls for Work are open to all photographers internationally over the age of 18. The Davis Orton Gallery promotes both gallery exhibitors and portfolio showcase exhibitors through its website, press releases, banner and other forms of marketing.
